Wansbeck Hospital, part of the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, was opened in June 1993 to serve the people of Ashington and surrounding areas. Since opening, the café had not been updated except for a lick of paint now and again. Sections of the food service counter had long since failed to operate within acceptable limits and the EHO had called for major improvements.
With a successful history of delivering top quality food service environments for the Trust spanning back almost 12 years, Space Design & Construction were appointed to design and deliver a new facility for Wansbeck. A complete strip-out of the existing space was necessary to facilitate the new design which included a reconfigured servery area, new pass-through hatch and hot holding cupboard to the adjacent kitchen complete with fire shutter, new hygienic wall, floor and ceiling finishes, complete new electrical installation, new food service counters and associated catering equipment, new fire doors to the entrance corridor and a complete new decorative scheme.
Taking its lead from the local Woodhorn Colliery which provided employment for many of Ashington’s residents over the years, the new restaurant was renamed the Woodhorn Café in it’s honour.
The facility has been well received from both staff and visitors, we are delighted to have worked Space Design.
