The Visitor Centre at Castleton lies in the very heart of the village and is the flagship visitor centre for the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA). Occupying a building, which was formerly an industrial site, it has grown over the years with additional buildings added to form the space they have today. The Visitor Centre plays an important role in the community, providing a central meeting and information point for visitors not only to the historic village of Castleton, but also to the wider Peak District National Park.
To keep pace with ever-changing customer needs, the refurbishment included a revitalised retail area, state-of-the-art media and presentation space, exhibition area for the Castleton Historical Society, office and storage space, new café, toilet facilities and external seating areas. Following a successful competitive tender process, Space Design & Construction (SDC) was awarded the contract.
Working closely with the PDNPA throughout the project, SDC’s design expertise was called upon to develop the initial design as works progressed, ensuring that the finished scheme delivered way beyond the client’s expectations.
Following an official opening ceremony by the Country File presenter, John Craven, the long-awaited revitalised centre was opened to the public.
