Having worked closely with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for a number of years, Space Design & Construction were approached by the Trust’s Catering and Estate’s departments, to help design all of the catering related spaces within the new multi-million pound state-of-the-art Emergency Care Centre in Cramlington. These spaces included the main production kitchen, central dish-wash area, staff & public restaurant, 12 individual ward kitchens, walk-in cold and freezer rooms, storerooms and staff rest room.
Patient feeding was given high priority – a system was required that could provide awide choice of meals, that could be delivered at any time of the day or night and with a consistently high degree of quality. Space Design worked with the Trust’s preferred food supplier Apetito, who provide frozen pre-packaged food options, which can be regenerated at ward level, giving the staff total control over individual patient food requirements. As each meal is regenerated in special ovens within the ward kitchens and controlled by bar codes, the food is consistently delivered to the patients at the right temperature and packed full of nutrients and flavour. This system also has the added benefit of greatly reducing food waste.
Following a competitive tender process we were successful in winning the contract from Lend Lease for the installation of all the spaces that we had previously designed.
On the back of the successful design of the Cramlington Hospital, Space Design & Construction were appointed to undertake a similar process for West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
Space Design & Construction spent alot of time with the us to ensure that every element of the new patient feeding system was considered within the design, we are deslighted with the result.
